Before coming to American University, Bob Griffith was only someone I knew only from scholarship. I used his work for my Master’s Thesis, and was so impressed that when I was applying to schools, he became the singular reason for me applying to American. I was impressed that, as chair of his department, he always responded to my queries warmly and promptly. He confirmed to me that American was a place that cared about its grad students. When I met him in person, I was impressed by his humility, his humor, and his good nature. I remember embarrassing him terribly when I introduced him to my wife and in-laws with the statement, “he’s the reason I came here.” I only knew him briefly, but my respect for his life and work is immeasurable.
