For Bob

Bob Griffith was one of the most generous, giving, and caring persons I have encountered within or outside of academics. He was the perfect leader of the History Department because he advanced selflessly, energetically, and creatively the good of the department, its faculty, staff and students. He was constantly on the lookout for new initiatives to promote the common good while remaining exquisitely sensitive to our individual needs.

It is no accident that our department flourished in enrollments, majors, programs, and the quality of faculty and students under his leadership. Bob was a superb scholar who wrote a path-breaking book on the McCarthy era in American history along with many important articles. He also led the department in adapting new media to historical study.

He was an outstanding academic leader who was always interested in helping to advance the scholarship and career of faculty members. My own scholarly work was greatly enriched by his advice and comments. I can also personally say that without his interest and determination my nomination for distinguished professor at AU would not have gone forward.
