Bob and Public History at UMass

As History Department Chair, Bob Griffith was instrumental in establishing the Public History Program at UMass Amherst in 1986.   He believed that History was a medium for  civic engagement, and once I got to campus was extremely supportive of my efforts to get the Program off the ground.   As a new, junior faculty member I absolutely enjoyed working with Bob.  His faith and enthusiasm were a constant source of encouragement, and he played an important mentoring role for me as he surely did for many other colleagues and students.   I often think of him as a model for how I should act as a senior faculty member today.    While a terrific individual scholar, I will always remember Bob’s enormous personal and intellectual generosity.  He helped those with whom he worked to become better at what they did.
